It was something that just happened. I don’t think anyone really plans on getting into insurance, it just seems to go that way and you never really get a chance to escape! I have been an underwriter for private and commercial insurance for a long time. To be fair, though, I really enjoy the work and have met some
great friends in the various offices in which I have worked.
Describe your average working day
I work with High Net Worth Home Insurance for A-Plan in Alton, Hampshire. When you get into the office, you can never be certain which clients you will speak to during the day and whether it will be just a routine change to their policy, or if you will be speaking to a prospective new client regarding a quotation.
When you’re not steering clients into better insurance, you’re at the wheel – what drove you towards racing?
I think it was my dad’s fault! When I was a lot younger, he used to take me to watch kart racing and he used to do a fair bit of it at an amateur level. I have always loved the thrill and adrenaline of being around racing cars, so it seemed a natural progression for me to take up racing.
What shared qualities do you think are essential for life on the track and on the job?
I think the main similarity is a determination to succeed, whether that is securing new business or getting a podium finish at the racetrack.
Do you have any land speed ambitions or exciting challenges coming up?
I would need a sponsor to achieve more in motor racing, really, so at the moment I am limited to as far as I can stretch my savings! I am racing in the Time Attack Challenge and my next outing is to Oulton Park, which should be good. I also have a little Golf GTi, in which I do some sprint racing in the HSA sprint championship.
