Gary Burch needed Hiscox when his car was only two days old

Imagine the thrill of picking up the new Aston Martin DB9 you’ve been lusting after for years. Now, think of the horror when just two days later someone crashes into it, rendering it completely useless.

Gary Burch, Company Director of a software business, knows this feeling all too well after someone crashed into his newly purchased dream car — worth £125,000.

The accident took place one Saturday lunchtime, when an elderly lady in a Nissan Micra failed to make the turn at a junction and smashed into the side of Gary’s new car. “There was a fair amount of damage to my car,” he explains. “Of course, my first concern was to rush out to see if the lady was OK, but all the time I kept looking back over my shoulder at my poor car!”

The lady wasn’t hurt and Gary suffered minor scratches and whiplash in the accident. Thinking quickly, he phoned his son, who brought a camera to record the scene. Meanwhile, Gary could only watch as Aston Martin arrived to take away his beloved but battered vehicle.

By the time Gary got in touch with Hiscox, he had a dossier of photographs and a statement of the event to give to his claims handler. Luckily, he had been a Hiscox motor insurance customer since May, after switching to the policy on the advice of his broker, Cheam Insurance Brokers. Indeed, Gary and his broker had recognised the risks that can go hand in hand with owning a luxury car and knew that Hiscox could offer the service that he needed.

“When you own a car like this, most insurance companies don’t want to even talk to you, but the Hiscox policy is so comprehensive — they know the cars and the needs of the people who buy them,” Gary explains.

The claims handler provided Gary with a legal firm and, within hours, his courtesy car arrived in the shape of an identical DB9. Within three weeks, and thanks to the expertise of Hiscox, the third party’s insurer had been persuaded to settle at the full value of Gary’s car and had made a settlement offer. He was then able to buy a replacement of his dream car.
