Debbie Dobson
Horse riding competitor and insurance broker Debbie Dobson reveals her equestrian passion
What are the rewards and hurdles of working in insurance?
I find working in insurance very rewarding because every case that I see is different in its own way. It is satisfying to know at the end of the day that I have made a difference and helped someone to protect their prized possessions. This can be quite a task with risks that are more difficult to place, but I do enjoy a challenge!
Describe your average working day
My specialist area is high net worth home and motor insurance. I spend a lot of time out of the office developing relationships with insurers and looking for new business opportunities, as well as keeping in contact with colleagues in our offices throughout the North West.
How did you first become interested in horse riding?
I was only about five years old when I first sat on a horse and it’s a passion that’s been with me ever since. As a child, I worked at a riding centre during the school holidays and at weekends in exchange for free lessons. I’d always hoped that I would one day be able to afford a horse of my own and I achieved this seven years ago. Where do the worlds of horse riding and insurance overlap? Last year, I was able to attend the Dressage at Hickstead event and see top riders from across Europe – a fantastic opportunity that came courtesy of Hiscox being the sponsor.
Which horse riding sports do you enjoy playing or watching?
I mainly compete in Affiliated Dressage so I’m hoping to qualify for the British Dressage Summer Championships. I also enjoy attending local riding club shows with my friends – I enjoy watching almost anything with horses in!
Do you take life at a gentle trot or a mad canter?
I would like to take life at a gentle trot but working full time and having a horse, husband, dogs and house (in that order) means that I usually take it at a mad canter, sometimes even a gallop with hurdles!
